Challenges in Emergency Department Management: A Case Studies Approach
EDs face continuing challenges that result in frequent trial and error approaches with intermittent stressful effects. Experiences gained in addressing these have yet to be distilled into prescriptive models for others. This workshop by senior faculty with many years of varying experiences is the first to use well-developed case studies to educate those who need to manage large and busy EDs. The issues discussed range from day-to-day matters such as management of quality indicators to the other extreme of approach to an infectious disease outbreak. Issues discussed include setting up of new services in EDs as well as developing brand new Departments. This will allow future ED chiefs to better cope with similar challenges in their work areas.

Focused Ultrasound For Emergency & Critical Care Workshop
The concept of 'emergency and critical ultrasound' refers to ultrasonography applied in 'point-of-care' environment such as emergency departments, ICUs, pre-hospital care, austere environments, disaster scenes, tactical operations, and humanitarian care missions. In such settings point-of-care image acquisition and interpretation, integrated with advanced life support protocols (e.g. ACLS, ATLS) according 'ABCDE' and 'Head-to-toes' -type approaches, allows for rapid and effective decision making, enhanced triage, diagnosis, therapy, monitoring, and follow up. This 2-day course aims to introduce basic algorithm-based ultrasound assessment through guidance by an experienced faculty and hands-on practical on clinical cases.
