Travel To Singapore

To ensure easier travel arrangements, the Organising Committee has appointed Star Alliance as the Official Airline Network for the Conference. 

To obtain the Star AllianceTM Conventions Plus discounts, please call the reservations office of a participating Star Alliance Member Airline and quote the following Convention Code: SQ01S10.

Registered participants plus one accompanying person travelling to the event are automatically granted a discount of up to 20%, depending on fare and class of travel booked.

Discounts are offered on published business and economy class fares, excluding website/internet fares, senior and youth fares, group fares and Round the World fares.

Climate and Dress
Singapore has a mild tropical climate with abundant rainfall throughout the year and an average temperature of 28 degree Celsius. Dress code is generally informal but formal wear will be required at certain places and occasions.


Safety
The World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) identified Singapore as the most politically stable country in Asia. In research done by Mercer Human Resource Consulting in 2003, Singapore was ranked second in personal safety among the world' top 50 cities.  


Time Difference
Singapore time is 8 hours ahead of GMT.

Visa Requirements
Nationals of a large majority of countries do not require visas for social visits of 30 days' duration, provided that they are in possession of internationally recognised travel documents, adequate funds and return or onward air tickets.

Travel On Singapore

Public Transport

Public transport is highly accessible and inexpensive in Singapore. The following modes of travel are available:

• Buses
A fleet of more than 3,500 fully air-conditioned buses operate daily from 0530 hours till 2300 hours. Fares for buses are as low as S$1 - 2, depending on the number of fare stages travelled.

• Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)
The air-conditioned passenger train service has stations all over the city. Trains operate from 0600 hours to 2330 hours at frequencies of 3-8 minutes (peak hours) and 10-15 minutes (off-peak hours). Travel fares by MRT range from S$1 onwards. Tickets are available from General Ticketing Machines (GTM) located at all MRT stations.

• Taxis
Singapore has more than 24,000 air-conditioned taxis operated by 8 different companies. Taxis can be flagged down 24 hours a day on most roads. Well-marked taxi stands are available outside most shopping centres and hotels. Current rates / applicable surcharges are obtainable at tourist information counters and at the hotel concierge.

The following banks are located at Suntec City Mall :

• Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC)


Credit Card and Currency
Major credit and charge cards are widely accepted. The basic unit is the Singapore Dollar (S$). Banks and money changers are located at major shopping centres and airports to facilitate currency exchange.


Electricity
Singapore抯 electrical voltage is 220-240 AC, 50 Hertz. Most hotels can provide a transformer to convert electrical appliances from 110-120AC, 60 Hertz to the local voltage.


Drinking Water
Singapore is known for its safe and clean drinking water. Tap water need not be boiled and is safe for drinking.


Tipping
Tipping is not expected in Singapore. Most hotels and restaurants levy a 10% service charge on their bills.


Hotels Around the Conference Venue
Singapore has a wide range of hotels, all easily accessible to the Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre (Suntec Singapore), the venue for ICEM 2010. Most are within walking distance of the convention centre. The remaining hotels are usually a short distance away (within 15 minutes) if riding the city抯 efficient underground rail system or the very reliable surface public transport system. When looking for hotels, please ensure that the one you choose would fulfill your needs, especially the following:

1. Type of rooms
2. Family suites, if you are travelling with family
3. Proximity to convention centre
4. Facilities required
5. Price range

The convention centre is located at Raffles Boulevard in the Marina Bay area (or city centre).

Affordable Accommodation
The Conference Organisers are making available a wide range of hotels and similar accommodation available for conference delegates attending ICEM 2010. A large number of good quality 2-star to 6-star hotels are available within a 2-km distance of the Conference venue. Please refer to Page 16-17 of this brochure for guidance on hotel accommodation. Kindly book your accommodation early to avoid disappointment.
